Causes of Excessive Head Sweating

Sweating or perspiration is one of the vital functions of the body, which helps it to stay cool. In most cases, it is considered healthy to sweat, but some people experience frequent and excessive sweating. Excessive sweating may affect some parts of the body like palms, soles, armpits, etc.,or can be generalized (felt throughout the body). Excessive head sweating is termed as ‘cranial hyperhidrosis’, which is not as common as other types. Excessive head sweating may be due to some hormonal changes, lifestyle factors, or health conditions. Hence, it is very important to find out the causes of excessive head sweating.

Causes of Excessive Head Sweating

Excessive head sweating can lead to many embarrassing conditions like smelly hair, which leads to an itchy scalp. In short, this condition creates an unpleasant and unhygienic look to the affected person. Hence, it is very necessary to treat the condition, for which a right diagnosis is indispensable. The following are some of the causes of excessive head sweating.

Thyroid Disorders

Thyroid glands produce hormones, which are used by the body for various purposes. Any variation in the amount of hormone produced by these glands can create several problems. Deficiency of thyroid hormones is called hypothyroidism, while overproduction of these hormones is termed as hyperthyroidism. One of the common symptoms of hyperthyroidism is frequent and excessive sweating. An overactive thyroid can increase the internal body temperature, which in turn causes excessive head sweating.

Anxiety or Stress

Anxiety has a very important role to play as far as excessive head sweating is concerned. It is a known fact that many people tend to sweat more in conditions of stress and anxiety, but in case of some people, the sweating is more concentrated on the head and is also more profuse. People affected by excessive head sweating claim that the symptoms are aggravated by stressful events.

Menopause

Hot flashes during the phase of menopause is a common problem. Hot flashes are accompanied by intense heat on the upper body, rapid heartbeat and heavy sweating. The intensity of hot flashes and sweating varies from one woman to another, but those who are affected with cranial hyperhidrosis may experience excessive sweating on their head.

Other Factors

Apart from the above said causes, there are other factors which can lead to excessive head sweating. A heart attack can be accompanied by excessive head sweating along with chest pain and other symptoms. Diabetic patients may also experience this condition. Another reason for excessive head sweating is the frequent skipping of meals, which results in low blood sugar. Apart from health conditions and lifestyle factors, family history is also considered as a cause for excessive head sweating. People whose parents, siblings, or close relatives suffer from this condition are more prone to suffer from excessive head sweating as well.

If you are also affected by this condition, consult a doctor to rule out the possibilities of any diseases or disorders. Excessive head sweating can be tackled by treating the basic cause of the condition, and should never be ignored.
